The difference between poetry and rhetoric is being ready to kill yourself instead of your children.

Childhood Facts
The first picture book I ever read was called I Hate My Bow. It was about a cute, grumpy, fluffy, white dog that hated everything, even babies.
I also loved the The Ugly Duckling. I was so sad that he was “ugly” just because he didn’t look like the other ducklings. I colored him yellow on every page with a marker so he could.
I had a Hunchback of Notre Dame lunch box. My mom...

Last night
I had a dream that I was at Hogwarts and Voldemort was trying to kill me. He captured all my friends and put them in Azkaban. I broke into Azkaban using an invisibility cloak and saved everybody.
I didn’t want to wake up. But sadly I did. :(

What's your favorite book?
Definitely one of the most evil questions to ask an English major, another being “Who’s your favorite writer?”. I know this answer sounds cliche but I really don’t have a single favorite book. I do have favorite books though. I finally managed to wheedle it down to these ten titles.
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Every Visible...

The future
certainly does have a way of sneaking up on you.
My junior year of college has just ended and I can’t help but think “WHOA!” because it really did fly by pretty quickly. I can still remember the day I moved into my dorm my freshman year and how scared and awkward I was. I was so afraid of meeting new people and living with complete strangers. I never managed to keep in contact...

Summer Bucket List
So I’ve done nothing but sleep, eat, and play Pokemon so far (no surprise) so I thought it would be nice to make a list of things I hope to do/accomplish this summer. I’ll be spending the first half of my summer in Berkeley for Session A and then will be traveling back to LA in July!
So in Berkeley I hope to:
learn how to ride my bike (still rusty on turns and braking)
swim in the...

Hey beautiful!
I was sitting on a bench by the bus stop, totally engrossed in my book, and not paying attention to anything around me when I heard a “Hey beautiful.” I looked up reflexively and I saw some dude on his bicycle. I thought I was going to get hit on by another creepy asshole, but this dude was, well, normal. He seemed to be around my age and he was smiling, not in a creepy, predatory way...

Writing an English essay about Audre Lorde.
Difficult but empowering. My thesis is simply, “The personal is political.”

MFA
I’m seriously considering getting one. I feel like I have a very high potential for creative writing, but I’ve always been afraid to pursue it because of what other people might think. I still want to get a Ph.D though. I was talking to a friend about which one I should get (because it seemed like either or) and she said, “Why not get both?”
Would that be a little too...

My Favorite Book Stores in Berkeley
1. Books, Inc.: Located on 4th Street (close to the Marina), it’s the oldest independent book store in the West! They have a great selection of bestsellers, fiction, and children’s books. They also have really good sales—I bought a Piccadilly Notebook there for only $4 (retail price was $9) and they sell these awesome author portrait buttons for $1 each (I bought Eliot, Faulkner,...

I had asked for flowers, but instead they gave me petals. They were not enough to fill the vase I had set aside. It just stood there— clear, empty, and white— at the bottom there was only an inch of tap water.
